Our Review

The show that ate the world: 456 desperate people, children’s games, deadly stakes. Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Korean phenomenon is a death game with a class conscience — the contestants aren’t adventurers, they’re the abandoned: debtors, gamblers, defectors, migrants. The games (Red Light Green Light, the dalgona honeycomb, the marble game, the glass bridge) are staged with nightmare-gaiety production design, pastel stairs and masked staff like a murder-carnival.

Season 1’s genius is the Gganbu marble episode — an hour that weaponizes friendship itself — and Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun, a gambling addict whose fundamental decency curdles into survivor’s fury. The Front Man reveal lands, and the finale’s rage against the game’s architects (“you are not horses, you are human”) is earned. Season 2 splits the difference: a return season that’s really the first half of a longer story, ending on a cliffhanger that made the planet yell. It sets up the endgame, and the Rock Paper Scissors loyalty-test scene is Squid at its best.

Verdict: Watch it. Cultural history, and it still slaps.
