Our Review

Japan’s answer to Squid Game that actually predates it — and in some ways beats it. A trio of Tokyo slackers are hurled into an abandoned, empty version of the city where they must survive deadly games organized by unseen sadists. The games themselves are the star: they’re clever, rules-based death puzzles that play like live-action manga (which they are — Haro Aso’s source material gives the show structural discipline Squid Game never had).

Season 1 escalates with shocking economy; the Witch Hunt game and the Tag game are instant classics of the death-game genre. Season 2 goes bigger — the King of Spades is a relentless war game, the Osmosis game is genuinely horrifying — and the finale’s explanation of the borderland is a beautiful gut-punch that retroactively recontextualizes everything. Kento Yamazaki’s Arisu is a rare death-game protagonist whose idealism feels earned, not naive.

Verdict: Watch it. The best death-game show on TV, and it stuck the landing.
