Our Review

The greatest superhero television series ever made, full stop. Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski’s art-deco Gotham — painted on black paper so the shadows drink the light — gave Batman a visual identity that influenced every screen version since. Kevin Conroy’s Batman defined the character for a generation; Mark Hamill’s Joker remains the definitive screen Joker — theatrical, genuinely funny, and unhinged in a way live-action has never matched.

The real genius is the writing: BTAS treated children like adults. Heart of Ice reinvented Mr. Freeze as a tragedy and won an Emmy; Almost Got ‘Im is a perfect poker-game framing device; Baby-Doll is one of the saddest hours of ’90s TV. It created Harley Quinn, gave Robin a real arc, and launched the DCAU that ran for 14 years. Mask of the Phantasm remains the best Batman film released in any format.

Verdict: Essential. The high-water mark of the entire genre.
