Our Review
The HBO animated series that proved adult animation could be genuinely dark and cinematic. Al Simmons, a government assassin, is betrayed and murdered, then returns from Hell as Spawn, a Hellspawn warrior caught between the demon Malebolgia who owns his soul and the remnants of the human life he lost.
Keith David’s voicework alone makes this worth watching: gravel, rage, and grief in every line. The 90s HBO budget shows sometimes, but the moody cyberpunk noir atmosphere, the mature storytelling, and the willingness to actually use its R rating set the template for everything from Castlevania to Invincible decades later.
Our take: 8/10.
