Our Review
The high school movie Spider-Man deserved after a decade of webshooters played by grown men. Tom Holland is genuinely fifteen here, and the film builds his world correctly: decathlon practice, a crush he can’t talk to, a crummy apartment in Queens, and a Stark suit he keeps getting grounded from. The friendly neighborhood has never been more literal.
Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes is the best villain in the MCU, full stop. A salvage contractor squeezed out by a government cleanup contract, he runs a crew that strips alien tech and sells weapons out of a van, a working class grievance the movie plays completely straight. The car scene, Peter trapped in the back seat while the man driving happens to be his girlfriend’s father and the Vulture, is the best suspense sequence Marvel ever staged.
The Washington Monument rescue and the Staten Island Ferry disaster give the set piece quota, and the finale, where Peter turns down Tony’s offer of a spot on the Avengers because his math quiz is tomorrow, is the most true to character ending the series managed. Zendaya’s deadpan MJ is a running gag that grows on you.
Our score: 8/10. The best pure Spider-Man movie of the three studios’ attempts.
