The best of the Marvel/Netflix street-level dramas. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle — the murder machine with a dead family and a moral code written in ammunition — gets a series that’s less a superhero show than a meditation on what war does to the men it doesn’t kill. Frank uncovers the conspiracy behind his family’s massacre, and the show has the patience to make it hurt: this is a drama about veterans wearing a skull-vest action exterior.

Bernthal is monstrous and heartbreaking, often in the same scene. Ben Barnes’ Russo and Amber Rose Revah’s Madani give the spy-thriller machinery real weight. The action is brutal and legible — the season 1 finale fight between Frank and Russo is a grueling, perfect capstone. Season 2 is weaker but lands the character’s final note. The Disney+ era hasn’t tried anything this grounded since.

Verdict: Watch it. One batch, one show.
