One season, one car, one miscalculation. The reboot swaps the drifter mystique of the original for Justin Bruening’s by the book Mike Tracker, keeps Hasselhoff behind the camera, and puts Val Kilmer in the voice box, reading KITT’s lines like a man bored by a GPS. The pilot has a decent car chase and nothing else to sell: no buddy chemistry, since the car sulk at its driver all season, no villain worth the effects budget, and a tone that never picks between family adventure and crime drama.
Critics landed on it hard, 5 percent on the Tomatometer, and NBC canceled after seventeen episodes. The original survives on personality; this one survives as trivia, the version where KITT sounds disinterested and the hero has no line anybody remembers. Hasselhoff’s producing touch gave it polish and no pulse.
Watch it only if you are completing the franchise rather than choosing a Friday night.
