It starts with a bride in a wedding dress running into a coffee shop, and somehow that soft focus setup became the most watched comfort television in history. Six twentysomethings hang out between an apartment, a balcony across the hall, and Central Perk, and the show’s real invention is the group as main character: the ensemble timing on the best episodes (The One with the Embryos, The One with the Football, the Thanksgiving run) is closer to a chamber comedy than the laugh track machinery around it.
The honest read is that Friends peaked early and coasted on chemistry it never stopped having. The Ross and Rachel will they or won’t they carried seasons that did not deserve the oxygen, Chandler’s defensive joke mechanism got funnier as the other characters got softer, and Phoebe survived on Lisa Kudrow’s commitment to being weird in a straight sitcom. The late seasons lean on plot contrivance and the famous ones still work because the cast throws everything at the page.
As rewatch fuel it remains unbeaten, and as a time capsule of nineties network sheen it is worth one proper watch: seasons 3 through 5, then the finale on a dare.
