Our Review

Nobody expects much from a show called DMV, and that is exactly the charm. CBS’s single camera comedy follows the clerks, customers, and small tragedies of a California Department of Motor Vehicles office, and it mines the most universal hatred in American life for surprisingly warm comedy.

The cast makes it work: a strong ensemble of underachievers who take their ridiculous jobs more seriously than the job deserves, and the customer-of-the-week structure lets guest characters shine. It is a workplace comedy in the Taxi and Superstore lineage, where the setting is the joke and the people are the heart.

One season, 20 episodes, cancelled but complete enough to enjoy as a light binge. It never got the marketing push it deserved and found most of its fans after the fact.

Our take: 7/10. A pleasant surprise that deserved better, now a comfortable weekend binge.
