The Marvel Netflix era’s crown jewel, still the best flesh and blood superhero show ever made. Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, blind lawyer by day, devil horned vigilante by night, Catholic guilt by always, fights Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio, the definitive Kingpin: a soft spoken monster who genuinely loves this city and wants to own it) for the soul of Hell’s Kitchen. Season 1 is a near perfect crime drama with the hallway fight that changed action-TV grammar; season 2 introduces the Punisher (Jon Bernthal, instantly definitive); season 3, the comeback after Defenders, is the best Marvel TV season, period: Fisk’s return, Matt’s crisis of faith, Bullseye’s origin.

The show’s discipline: it’s a lawyer show and a crime show and a superhero show simultaneously, and the action, practical, weighty, every fight costing Matt weeks of healing, makes the powers feel physical. Cox’s Matt is the MCU’s most fully realized protagonist: faith, stubbornness, and the self destructive streak that makes him both hero and problem.

Verdict: Essential. The devil of Hell’s Kitchen, done right.
