The Early Word: six seasons and a movie, still waiting. Peacock's Community film is not dead, the script is done, the whole cast is in, and the only thing missing is a month where everybody is free at once.

Our Review

The Early Word, because that is all the Community movie has ever been. Peacock and Sony Pictures Television greenlit the feature on September 30, 2022, answering the longest-running joke in comedy fandom: six seasons and a movie. Four years on it has not met a camera, but it has never been closer to alive than it is right now, and the honest status, assembled from everything the people making it have actually said in 2026, fits on one page. No score, because nothing exists to score.

Where it stands: Dan Harmon told ScreenRant’s President Curtis podcast in July 2026 that the film is in a holding pattern, not a grave. No one has killed it. The blocker is the one thing no streamer can buy: a window where nine famously busy people are free at the same time. Harmon’s phrasing was the whack-a-mole of it, actors who are not paid nearly enough to park a giant chunk of their calendar for a maybe, so they take other jobs, and the window closes again. Writer and co-producer Andrew Guest told The Watch podcast in February that production got very close to shooting before one cast member’s project collided with the dates, and he asked fans not to be upset with anyone. Guest also explained the one non-negotiable: they will not do an Arrested Development style shoot where the ensemble is filmed apart, because the chemistry of that cast in one room is the entire product. Executive producer Steve Levy says conversations happen weekly or biweekly on Six Seasons and a Podcast. Nobody is being coy about it, they are just slow-walking a reunion that keeps almost happening.

The script is real. Donald Glover said on the red carpet in early 2026 that he was texting people that day and was told the script was done. Harmon’s response, via Variety, was that Glover’s sources are unreliable because the script is always almost done, followed by the first actual plot sentence anyone has gotten: it is set on the campus of Greendale Community College. Harmon and Guest wrote it. McHale, Harmon, Guest, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster produce. No synopsis, no title beyond the working one, no release date, no confirmed production date.

The cast is the easy part, and that fact is the whole tragedy. Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong were all attached at the 2022 announcement. Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown have both since confirmed they are in, and Glover has said he is fully committed. The one name not coming back is Chevy Chase, and Harmon stopped dancing around it in July 2026 on Obsessed: The Podcast. Asked about Pierce, he said the decision is not his, which he considers a nice thing, and that the consequences of season four were about other people feeling safe in a workplace he created. NBC fired Chase in 2012 after he directed a racial slur at Glover and crew members on set. The study-group reunion, minus the study group’s worst guest.

What would change this page: a start date, which means the calendars lined up, and then a trailer, which means footage exists. Harmon has promised he will be the first to say so if someone ever puts a stake through its heart. Until then, the promise holds at five seasons and a movie that keeps almost happening. The series itself is streaming on Netflix and Hulu, with a non-exclusive Peacock license that came bundled with the movie deal, so Greendale is only a rewatch away while you wait.
