Our Review

A suspended lawyer, a faker, a millionaire, a divinity school dropout, a jock, and a girl from the 1980s walk into a community college. Dan Harmon’s meta sitcom is the most inventive comedy of its era: paintball episodes that become action movies, a bottle episode made of claymation, clip shows for episodes that never existed, and an ongoing war over the sincerity of television itself.

The honest guide: seasons 1 to 3 are all time great television. Season 4 (the gas leak year, as the show itself calls it) is the dip. Season 5 recovers with a bang, and the Yahoo years have gems. Through it all, Abed is one of the most original characters ever written, and the study group’s chemistry carries everything.

Six seasons and a movie became a real prophecy. Start at season 1 and do not skip Modern Warfare.

Our take: 8.5/10. The most creatively fearless sitcom of its generation.
