Our Review
Batman: Caped Crusader is the J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot production that did the thing nobody expected from a streaming Batman: take the 1960s Adam West series’ setting, rogues and color palette and play every frame of it dead straight, no wink, no Robin. It premiered on Prime Video in August 2024 with ten episodes after a development shuffle that saw it briefly dead on Fox’s animation slate, and it holds 93% on Rotten Tomatoes from nearly a hundred reviews.
Hamish Linklater wears the cowl with a growl borrowed from every adult Batman before him, and the show structures itself as period noir: Gotham is a city of racketeers and crooked aldermen, police corruption is a plot line rather than set dressing, the Penguin runs a protection racket out in the open, and the Joker’s debut episodes are handled as horror rather than color. The origin beats, Two-Face included, are rebuilt for tragedy instead of camp, which is exactly the transaction the premise promises.
This is the most grown up of the streaming era Batmans and the one worth the time for anyone whose favorite remains Mask of the Phantasm, and it wears its sixties homage like a trench coat rather than a costume. Season one is ten episodes on Prime Video, the follow-up is in the works, and the guide has every aired episode with what the case file actually was.
