DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has put the fate of Lanterns season 2 where it belongs, in the writers’ room. Speaking to Collider ahead of the Clayface premiere, Safran said the decision on a second season rests on whether the room can deliver what he called “a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season.” Fans should hear the verdict “before the end of the year,” he said. No renewal was announced.
The comment fills the gap left by yesterday’s Deadline report that a renewal is pending. The eight episode first season closed on October 4 as the biggest new show in HBO Max history, with the finale pulling 10.5 million viewers worldwide in three days, up 13 percent from the premiere. Safran’s own framing of that run: the series brought Green Lantern “back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion” after years of cold storage following the 2011 film.
The delay also has a corporate shape. Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros closed days after the finale, so the greenlight, when it comes, will carry new signatures. For now the writers’ room is working on John Stewart’s next chapter and nothing is guaranteed. A staffed room is a good sign, not a yes.
