Summary

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempt to find a trio of cars which are equally at home on the race track as they are transporting a family to the shops, for a budget of 5,000 pounds. They end up with a BMW M3, a Mercedes 190E and a Ford Sierra Cosworth which they put through their paces in Europe’s home of speed, Germany. Plus James makes a rare visit to the Top Gear track to test a pair of Porsches – the 911 Sport Classic and Boxster Spyder – and Alastair Campbell is the star in the brand new reasonably priced car.

Our Take

A solid middle-of-the-road episode carried by the cheap saloon challenge, which delivers the usual bickering and a genuinely fun German road trip. May’s Porsche comparison is dry but a bit slow, and the Campbell interview is an odd fit that drags in places. Worth a watch if you like the buying challenges, just don’t expect a classic.
