Summary
Upon discovery of the Phantom Zone projector in his spaceship, Superman makes contact with and releases a prisoner whose sentence is complete. She is a Kryptonian named Mala, and she quickly gains the same abilities that Superman possesses. She soon becomes hungry for power and Superman feels she may have to return to the Phantom Zone. Upon this threat, Mala uses the projector to release her General, Jax-Ur.
Our Take
A decent season opener that sets up the two-parter without much spark. Mala’s turn from grateful ally to power-hungry threat happens too fast to feel earned, though her voice acting sells the menace well. Worth a watch if you’re following the series, but it mostly feels like setup for the real payoff in part two.
