Episode Summary & Review

Summary

After Dr. McCoy informs Captain Kirk that he is dying, the Enterprise crew discovers a planetoid that is on a collision course with a inhabited world. Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down and discover it is a populated space ship where most of the inhabitants having no clue they are on a space ship.

Our Take

McCoy getting a terminal diagnosis gives this one real weight, and DeForest Kelley plays the fear and resignation without overdoing it. The generation-ship mystery is decent even if the priestess and her oracle feel like budget versions of better Trek ideas. The ending wraps up a bit too neatly, but it’s a solid hour with more emotional grounding than most season three outings.
