Summary

While on a routine supply mission to a colony planet, the U.S.S. Enterprise comes under an attack from an unknown malevolent force. Pike brings all his heart and experience to bear in facing the crisis, but the security officer warns him that the enemy cannot be dealt with by conventional Starfleet means.

Our Take

This is a tense submarine-style hour that trades away the usual planet-hopping for a claustrophobic cat-and-mouse game, and it mostly pays off. The Pike and La’an material gives the standoff real weight, though the flashback structure occasionally slows the momentum. Worth your time even if the resolution arrives a bit too neatly.
