Cogenitor

Episode Summary & Review

Summary

The Enterprise crew makes first contact with the Vissians, a species with three genders. Trip meets one of the species’ third gender, a Cogenitor, a being used for only breeding purposes. After learning how badly Vissians treat all Cogenitors, Trip attempts to help this Cogenitor, even though it directly interferes with Vissian culture.

Our Take

This is a heavy one, and mostly in a good way. Trip’s well-meaning interference sparks a genuinely uncomfortable debate about cultural relativism that the show doesn’t pretend to solve cleanly. The ending lands hard, though some of the Cogenitor’s rapid education feels rushed. A rare episode that trusts you to sit with a bad outcome.
