Summary
When an addictive implant in Garak’s brain begins to break down, causing the exiled Cardassian extreme pain, Dr. Bashir must convince a reluctant Garak to accept his help.
Our Take
This is a great character piece built almost entirely on conversation, and it earns every minute. Andrew Robinson plays Garak’s pain and deflection beautifully, spinning lies that may or may not be true, and Bashir finally gets something worth doing. The flashbacks to Cardassia drag a little and the ending stays vague, but the central dynamic is strong enough to carry it.
