The Terror Beyond (1)
Episode Summary & Review
Summary
Doctor Fate and Aquaman rescue Solomon Grundy, intent on using him to help battle an ancient evil. The pairing of these heroes is an homage to the Marvel Comics superhero team The Defenders and the plot is based upon H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.[1] Hawkgirl’s atheism is shaken by Grundy’s sacrifice to recover his soul, and to a lesser extentby the reliance of Wonder Woman and Aquaman on their deities when in need.
Our Take
A weird, ambitious hour that throws Aquaman, Dr. Fate, and a soul-searching Solomon Grundy at Lovecraftian horror, and mostly gets away with it. Grundy’s unexpected pathos is the real draw, and Hawkgirl’s crisis of belief gives the monster brawl an actual emotional core. The exposition gets clunky in spots, but the strange team-up energy keeps it fun. Worth a watch.
