Summary

Brockmire’s mother, who abandoned him and his sister at a young age, comes to town. She challenges Brockmire’s relationship with his sister and threatens Brockmire.

Our Take

This one leans hard into the family trauma that’s always simmering under Brockmire’s boozing, and it mostly works because the show doesn’t soften the mother or let Jim off the hook. Some scenes with the sister drag and rehash arguments we’ve already heard. Still, it’s a solid, occasionally uncomfortable hour that earns its emotional beats without getting sappy about it.
