Our Review
A workplace sitcom disguised as a college show, built by Dan Harmon with the most precise joke density on network television and a cast operating like one brain with seven bodies. Community is the smartest dumb show ever made: self aware without being cynical, its thesis is a study group where Abed is the thesis and Jeff Winger is the man learning to read it.
The peaks are structural stunts that pay off as comedy instead of party tricks: the paintball episodes (including the single take), the claymation Christmas hour, the reality parody that won an Emmy for writing. Season three is the high water mark. Season four without Harmon is a decent cover band, and the Yahoo season is a beautiful mess about the show itself.
The show never found its audience on NBC and found it forever afterward. Seasons one through three is the commitment; the rest is loyalty.
Our score: 9/10.
