Futurama Season 15: What Hulu’s Silence Really Means

Futurama ended Season 14 on Hulu with no Season 15 order. We read the Groening and Cohen quotes closely and made our call on whether the crew rises again.

Futurama wrapped its fourteenth season on Hulu on Sept 28 with an episode called “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion.” Read that title twice. A show that has been canceled, revived, canceled, revived, canceled and revived again does not pick a triple redundant finale name out of confidence. It picks it because the crew has stood on this exact podium before and would rather you laugh than mourn.

Here is the question every fan is typing: is this the ending that finally sticks? Hulu has not ordered a Season 15. TVLine reported on Sept 28 that the streamer has no plans for more Futurama as a regular series. The only confirmed future is three 66-minute specials, led by a Robot Santa Christmas story due in 2027. No order, no premiere date, no goodbye either. That is exactly the window where a verdict is worth writing, so here is ours.

What actually ended

Season 14 closed the show’s regular run on Sept 28, 2026. The finale, “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion,” was written by Margot Pyrceman and, unusually for a fake funeral, drew real praise: Polygon’s ranking of every Futurama ending called the new one “very good.” The same day, TVLine reported Hulu had no plans to order more episodes of the series proper. What the streamer did commit to are three 66-minute “XXXL” specials, first announced at San Diego Comic-Con, starting with the holiday installment next year.

So the scoreboard reads: regular series paused, IP alive, crew intact. That is not a cancellation and it is not a renewal. It is Hulu keeping the door open at a discount.

What the people making it are saying

Matt Groening went to Variety with an exclusive and treated the ending like an old joke: “we’ve come to an end many times before… We have lots more stories to tell. The animators and the actors and the writers all would love to do more stories and we’ll see. You never know.” That is hedged, and it should be read as hedged: nothing is ordered, and the people running the show are keeping the door propped with goodwill. The Variety headline was more confident than the quote: “We Will Rise Again.”

Co-creator and showrunner David X. Cohen is more candid about the machinery. On The Making Of podcast he confirmed this was the team’s sixth finale written as a possible last episode, with a seventh already in progress for the specials. “I feel like we’ve gotten pretty good at it,” he said. In an exclusive with ComicBook on Sept 29, Cohen called the 2027 installment “a big holiday epic movie,” right down to “a big Bender romance with a snowman,” and put the trilogy’s runtime at “about the same amount of material as a season.” Executive producer Claudia Katz, in the same interview, branded the format “triple extra large” and argued Futurama suits movie shapes in a way The Simpsons never could.

The team is also demonstrably not drifting apart. The same cast, writers and animation studio that made Futurama worked with Groening through five seasons of Disenchantment at Netflix, and Season 14 pulled off a Disenchantment crossover that took what Groening called “a very nimble negotiation” between Disney and Netflix. Teams do not untangle rights paperwork for a punchline unless they expect to keep working together.

Our call

Futurama comes back as a regular season. Again. Our odds-style lean: 70/30 that Hulu orders Season 15 within about two years of the first special airing.

Reason one: history. A show that has written six final episodes is a show where “the end” has always been temporary. Every past ending flipped back into a revival because the library keeps earning and the crew keeps choosing each other.

Reason two: the specials deal reads as a holding pattern, not an exit. Groening’s own account of the pitch is Hulu asking for “some big stories that we can promote.” Streamers do not fund an annual event franchise for an IP they are about to retire, and Cohen’s math, three specials equal one season, says the writers are still shipping a season’s worth of material a year. Nobody behind the camera has said anything that sounds like goodbye.

Reason three: economics. Futurama is Hulu’s animated tentpole that does not compete with The Simpsons for Disney’s own shelf, with proven production overhead and a built-in audience that showed up for all ten episodes this season.

What would change our mind: a soft showing for the first special in the 2027 holiday window, Groening’s “if it doesn’t happen, we’ll do something else” hardening into a real new project, or Hulu pushing its animation budget toward cheaper formats. Watch those tripwires, not the finale title.

The early coverage, to its credit, broke the no-order news fast. What it could not answer was the only thing that matters now: are three specials a send-off or a bridge to Season 15? Our read of the receipts says bridge. Do you trust a crew that has buried this many final episodes? We do. Our Futurama show page carries the full breakdown, and we will update this call the day Hulu speaks.
