Ted Lasso’s season four finale landed on Apple TV on October 7 and the comedy still has not been renewed. Four days of silence from a streamer whose flagship just ended on a cliffhanger-shaped open door. That silence is the story this week, so let’s skip the wait and render the verdict early.
What actually happened in the finale
Ted handed the AFC Richmond women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds, over to Alice Chilton as head coach and demoted himself to assistant beside Coach Beard. Rebecca Waddingham got her majority stake back. Roy Kent left for the Chelsea job. Apple’s own synopsis says Season Finale, not Series Finale. That is a small word doing a lot of work.
A show that is ending does not spend its last hour handing its main character a brand new job. Co-creator Brendan Hunt told ComingSoon the finale was a deliberate passing of the torch from the men’s team to the women’s squad, and that the production has taken the long view with the new cast from the start. Read that as intent, not accident.
What the people making it are saying
Hunt is hopeful without pretending to know anything. Asked by Deadline, on the record October 7, whether a season five renewal is imminent, he said: “Where did you hear that? … Well, then that’s news to me. I certainly hope it happens, and I’m optimistic, but yeah, haven’t heard anything official yet.”
He also crushed one rumor floating around finale week, and the correction matters. A writers room reportedly opened early? No, per Hunt: Apple can greenlight a room before it greenlights a season, the way season 2 got one, “but neither has happened.” No room, no order, no schedule. Everything else is vibes.
On Jason Sudeikis, Hunt told Variety the same day that the star plays his cards close to his chest, and that the team hoped for more than one season but would be okay if it stopped now. That is hedged, and the hedge implies the decision is Sudeikis’s to make and Apple’s to fund, in that order.
Around them, the signals stack. Apple programming chief Matt Cherniss said in July, per Deadline, that Sudeikis was looking to jump into the next season soon, though nothing had gotten started. Services chief Eddy Cue told ScreenRant in August that he hopes for more, that there are plenty of stories to go on, and, in the best line of the whole cycle, that Apple will show up. Sudeikis told The Hollywood Reporter in July that the revival was built as a fresh three-season plan, which maps to five and six. Cast-level, Tanya Reynolds told Decider on October 2 she had heard nothing. On this show the cast hears last, so that is not the discouraging data point it looks like.
Our call
Renewed. We’d put it at 75 to 80 percent, paperwork pending rather than a coin flip.
Three reasons. One, the economics: this is one of Apple’s most recognizable franchises, it came back after three years and still anchored the service’s comedy identity, and no streamer walks from a return that landed. Two, the structure: a finale that installs a new status quo, per Hunt’s own passing-of-the-torch framing, is a season five pilot in a season four body. Three, the talent trajectory: Sudeikis publicly framed the revival as a three-season arc and Hunt says a room could be greenlit fast, which is the behavior of a team planning ahead, not one saying goodbye.
What would change our mind, honestly, in order: the Goldstein and Temple scheduling Hunt waved off as wiggle room turning into real losses, a Sudeikis pivot to another passion project, or another year of this silence. Our read on the wait itself is boring and reassuring: Apple waited on this show before and came back anyway.
Watch for a writers room greenlight first. That is the tell, cheaper than a red carpet and more honest than any quote above.
All four seasons are streaming on Apple TV right now, and our full [Ted Lasso review and episode guide](https://showsyoushouldbewatching.com/shows/ted-lasso/) has the season-by-season breakdown if you need a rewatch map before the next one arrives.
So here’s the question: if season five really happens, what should Ted do with the Lady Greyhounds that season four didn’t try yet? We think a promotion battle for Alice and a proper rival club would beat any nostalgia cameo. What would you want to see?
