Scrubs Season 2 Premieres on ABC, and the Showrunner Says Dr. Cox Is Not Going Anywhere

The Scrubs revival returns for Season 2 on ABC with Dr. Cox in the hospital bed. Showrunner Aseem Batra tells Variety the comedy is not killing off the fan favorite.

The Scrubs revival is back. Season 2 premiered Wednesday night on ABC, with new episodes streaming the next day on Hulu. J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) return to Sacred Heart as senior doctors guiding a new crop of interns, including fresh arrivals Grant (John Higgins) and Mimi (Keyla Monterroso Mejia).

The season opens by leaning into the biggest cliffhanger left over from Season 1: Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) is now a patient at his old hospital, battling an autoimmune disease. Speaking to Variety, showrunner Aseem Batra moved to put fans’ worst fears to rest, saying the writers are not setting up a death for the character. He noted that the show is a comedy and that, with modern medication, Cox simply needs the right treatment to stabilize.

The premiere also finds J.D. smitten with Charlie (Rachel Bilson) and Elliot mentoring the new intern Tosh, and Batra teases more OG appearances ahead, including the Janitor (Neil Flynn) and Elliot’s ex Sean (Scott Foley). Batra also hints that J.D. and Elliot’s son Ollie could finally make an on screen appearance this season.
