Futurama is saying goodbye again. The animated comedy closes its fourteenth season on Hulu tonight, Monday, Sept. 28, with an episode jokingly titled “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion,” and Matt Groening says there are no plans at the moment for it to return as a regular series. But the creator is not ruling anything out. “They can put us in a coffin. They can nail the lid shut, but they can’t bury us. We will rise again,” Groening told Variety.
It is the latest farewell for a show that has survived several of them. Futurama premiered on Fox in 1999 and ended its run there in 2003. Comedy Central revived it in 2008 and closed it again in 2013, and Hulu brought it back in 2023. Each time the producers prepared an episode that could double as a series finale, and each time the show came back.
The Planet Express crew is not out of work entirely. Groening confirmed that three supersized specials, first announced at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, are in production and begin arriving on Hulu in 2027, starting with a Christmas installment. So treat tonight’s finale as final for now, with the usual Futurama asterisk.
