Summary
In this never before seen filmitization of Eric Jonrosh’s best selling novel The Spoils Before Dying, jazz musician Rock Banyon is accused of the murder of his former lover, Fresno Foxglove. The police give Rock two (maybe three) days to solve the murder, and he skips town and heads to Actual Mexico City… where he meets another old lover, Delores DeWinter.
Our Take
The deadpan noir parody mostly works, with Kristen Wiig turning in some of the funniest line readings you’ll hear all year, but the joke wears thin when Jonrosh’s wine-soaked interruptions pile up faster than the actual story. It’s a slow burn of a gag that asks a lot of patience for scattered laughs. Worth a look if the premise sounds fun, but don’t expect consistent comedy.
