It is the number one show on broadcast television, and the reason is simple: Hartley is genuinely likable and the cases resolve cleanly in the way people still want broadcast TV to work.
It is a throwback, lone hero, case of the week, a mystery about his own family threaded underneath, and it executes the formula with real polish. Not prestige, and proud of it.
