The first season is a legend: Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives hunting a killer across seventeen years, with a mood so thick you can taste it. Rust Cohle’s philosophy made half the internet quote it for a year.
Later seasons vary. Season two is a mess with good actors, season three recovers, and the Alaska season with Jodie Foster is strong. Start with one, which stands alone as one of the best crime stories ever filmed, and keep going if the mood grabs you.
