12 Monkeys
Our Review
The TV adaptation that had no business being this good. Terry Gilliam’s film was a paranoid time-travel puzzle; the Syfy series keeps the premise (a time traveler from 2043 tries to stop the plague that ends the world) and builds it into a four-season serialized epic with genuine metaphysical ambition — by the end it’s doing things with causality, love, and fate that rival Dark, while remaining emotionally coherent.
Aaron Stanford’s Cole and Amanda Schull’s Cassandra Railly are one of sci-fi TV’s great love stories — two people connected across time who keep meeting in the wrong order. Todd Stashwick’s Deacon undergoes one of TV’s best heel-face turns, and Emily Hinshelwood’s Jennifer Goines is a national treasure: a vessel for the show’s weirdest ideas and its beating heart. The series finale sticks the landing so completely it retroactively justifies every convoluted thread — a planned ending executed as intended, the rarest thing in sci-fi TV.
Verdict: Watch it. The best time-travel show ever made, and nobody talks about it.
