Gary and His Demons

Our Review

A deadpan Canadian gem about the world’s monster-slayer who is completely over it. Gary has been Earth’s chosen demon-hunter for decades; he’s tired, bitter, underpaid, and would like very much to retire — but the universe keeps appointing new chosen ones who keep dying, so he keeps clocking in. It’s Buffy by way of Office Space.

The animation is intentionally crude (early Adult Swim Flash energy), but the writing is sharp: every episode finds a new angle on the gap between cosmic stakes and workplace ennui. Gary’s handler Hanley, the oblivious bureaucracy of the demon-fighting organization, and a rotating cast of doomed protégés give it a reliable comic engine. Season 3 digs into Gary’s loneliness more bravely than a show this shaggy needs to, and mostly lands it.

Verdict: Watch it if you like your horror-comedy dry as a bone. A shortlist candidate for great unknown cartoons.
