Our Review

The spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series — developed by Bruce Timm with J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves — returns to a 1940s Gotham of art-deco shadows and tommy-gun gangsters, with a younger, colder Batman still figuring out the difference between vengeance and justice. The boldest swings are its reinventions: a female Penguin with real menace, Harley Quinn reimagined as a therapy-weaponizing psychologist, and a Batmobile that’s an actual vintage car.

It’s leaner and meaner than BTAS — ten tight episodes, noir atmosphere throughout, and Hamish Linklater holding his own stepping into Kevin Conroy’s shadow. What it lacks is warmth: this Batman is more isolated, the format trades serialized soap for procedural sharpness. A worthy companion piece that gets better as it goes.

Verdict: Watch it if you love BTAS — the same shadow, cast slightly differently.
